Would it be ok to put a guinea pig with a rat2007-11-24 22:20:16

I just want to say... a lot of people think that rats are aggressive... Let me just assure you that this is NOT ALWAYS TRUE! IN fact... when i put my rats and mice together, my mice attack my rats... biting them and chasing them... My rats, big babies that they are, RUN AWAY from the mice!

It really depends on the individual animal as i said!

If you have two females, (guinea and rat) i would say that that would be more likely to work, than two males...

If you are going to try it, hold them both, get a friend or relative to help... and bring them close to each other, so that they can sniff each other... Don't let them loose...

Then... Try putting their two cages next to each other, so that they can smell the other animal, and get used to it...

THEN... Get a separate cage, or perhaps some wire fencing around an area in the yard... And sit in their with the two... let them talk to each other, and play... If you notice them getting aggressive, separate them!

Now... The rat will most likely want to play... That is ok. but if you notice that it is being a bit rough, then take them away from each other...

Maybe try again in a couple of weeks!

If cats and dogs... dogs and rats, cats and rats, cats and rabbits... you know... (any number of combinations of animals that should be natural enemies, but have been introduced in an appropriate manner, and have complimentary personalities) can get along, then a rat and a guinea should!

(are you planning on keeping them in an inside cage, and outside during the day? If they are out at night, the rat might freeze! Guineas have hair to keep them warmer, and rats actually have a higher body temperature than we do, making drastic cold more of a shock to them!)

It is not ok for a guinea pig to be with any other kind besides its own!
