i wna a ferret but are the illegal in california and do they really smell as bad as people say?

Answers:

No they don't smell bad. I gave mine a bath, which he loved, every week.

They are from the skunk family, which is probably where they get their smell reputation. But when bought from a store they are good to go.

They are loads of fun, they only live about seven years though.

They are illegal in California so you are out of luck if you live here. There have been efforts at legalization over the years - don't hold your breath waiting.

they do have a very distinct smell...some people don't mind it, but a lot of people do...it's indescribable, but a ferrat kind of smells like a hampster cage x 10...you'd have to be able to live with it...

most people I have known let them run loose in their homes at all times...they are actually really sweet and a fun pet to have..

They smell worse - ferrets are A LOT of work just keeping their cage clean. We had 2 ferrets (Granola and Chewy) and they were sweet little punks (don't know why we started calling them punks - it just seemed to fit.) but they smelled awful! They were funny, and the only pet that is more entertaining is a skunk. (de-scented of course) Just be warned, they do smell bad and they are too smart for YOUR own good.
