Do you live in California? Yeah, I think they're illegal there. But if you really want one, move, or disguise it as a squirrel.
They're illegal over there like they are here in NYC but I have 2 of them. I got them at a pet shop right over the border of NYC and New York State. Mine will only smell "terrible" if I haven't cleaned their cage. You have to be able to devote a lot of time and money for them. Their cages have to be cleaned everyday. Like any other animal (including humans) they must be bathed regularly so they won't smell as bad. I don't know how it is over there but only vets who specialize in exotic pets will treat ferrets and they're not that easy to find as well as being more expensive then regular ferrets. In a matter of a year one of my ferrets required 2 major surgeries that cost me about $5000 total.
