Zero, My Hamster, Has a problem with her nails growing too fast and long2007-11-24 22:20:21

Her poor little nails are curled up and pressing into her feet. My boyfriend said that they should naturally wear themselves down. How do I help her?

I would not suggest clipping your hamsters nails, it can really hurt them if you mis-calculate or if they squirm when you clip (ouch!). If you insist to have they're nails clipped, take your hamster to a vet and have them do it. Or if you just want to wear them down, you could put some sandpaper in they're wheel for a short time each night while they're active (say 20 minutes to an hour). If you leave it in longer, they're feet could get raw and sore. If this happens, then don't use sandpaper. If your hamsters' nails are unusually long, and/or it is acting funny, you should take it to a vet. I've had this problem happen before in mice and rats. It could be caused by your hamster not being able to walk properly on its feet/hands, and so causing the nails to grow out. However, hamsters nails are usually short. Unlike rats, they're nails don't hurt or puncture the skin when you are holding them.

Although it's rare that they need their claws trimmed, you can do it with a pair of small, sharp scissors. I'm told that if you accidentally cut into your hamster's toe, there is not too much to be concerned about since the blood vessels in that part of the body are extremely small. Good luck!

I had a hamster that, as he grew old and less active, began having problems with keeping his nails naturally worn down. I simply took a pair of fingernail clippers and trimmed them down VERY CAREFULLY.
They usually do wear themselves down. Don't cut them on your own tho...take her to the vet if anything
Yes you will have to trim her nails now. Maybe have one person hold her and one trim the nails. Use a small baby nail clipper or a tiny pair of cuticle scissors. Just don't cut to far up on the nail or you will cut the "vein", then it will bleed. If this should happen you can stop it with flour on the end of a Q-tip. Press firmly on the nail tip. Just cut them short enough so they don't cut into her feet. Poor little cutie.
get a rough surface for her to run on and they should wear down them selves
Trim her nail as often as need be, you can have a vet or sometimes pet groomers show you how, then get a good pair of small animal nail clippers. I'd put some very week cleaned, smooth rocks in her cage, not the heavy so she dosn't get hurt. While she climbs around her cage and such, that should help keep them down. I'm not sure what would be causing them to grow to fast, maybe being cut incorrectly? See your local vet or pet groomer, she should be able to help you.
Put a small piece of brick in the hamsters cage. As the hamster runs over it the nails should naturally wear down. Watch to make sure the hamster does not chew the brick. If this happens remove the brick right away. If this does not work take it to the vet to get its nails trimmed. I don't suggest you try on your own.
