Why is my horse so hard to work with(part 2)2007-11-25 17:00:47

My horse is a 6 year old mare, her baby is 5mo old and they both bite. The people who had them before us didnt take care of them very well and They are very skiddish. We are never loud around them and we havent tried to ride either of them yet. We feed them sweet feed and whole oats. We leave a halter on them and we go to them as often as possible. i hope this is enough info for u to answer me. thank u, chelsea daniels

Answers:

ok chelsea, cut out the grain, gives em lots of energy.since your not working them they don't need it.give the mare all the hay she wants.its time to wean baby.put it in a small stall.feed her grain 2 times a day and hay once.worm her.if she gets too much hay she will pot gut.she will be come dependent on you and not her mother.also the mare will be without too and will be more affectionate.she may have to be stalled for awhile during the weaning process.for the biting i have found the most humane way i know of.get a little lemon ball and every time she trys to bite squirt her mouth with the lemon juice.no hitting pulling whiskers or pins or tacks.

also horses are very social and love to be scratched on the withers.when you do this she may try to scratch you back.don't take this as aggression.she just thinks she is doing you a favor too.the only reason they are skittish is because they don't trust you yet.be patient.tie her in the barn while you do chores and she will soon understand that you are the person that does the feeding and she will come around fast.

She had a bad experience with her last owners and the foal learned that behavior from it's mother.
