Why is my tarantula doing this

Why is my tarantula doing this2007-11-25 17:00:49

I'm tarantula sitting for a friend this semester. It's a common kind of pet store tarantula (wooly or rose haired, I think) and I believe it's a female.

Recently, after having her in my room for a couple of weeks, she started webbing off one of her tubes to live in. I could just barely see inside and I noticed there was thick white stuff all over the floor.

Today, when I looked again, she was sitting in the middle of the tank atop this blob of white stuff. It kind of looked like half of a melted marshmallow. Her abdomen was shrunken by almost half of what it used to be (origingally about the size of a small walnut).

Is this an egg sac that she made? She hasn't been in contact with any males in the month that I've had her.but I don't know how long a tarantula goes between mating and laying her eggs.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Answers:

Definitely sounds like a she. You cannot tell for sure if the eggs are good or not since the time your roommate owned it is unknown. Females are known to lay eggs, whether fertile or not. After feeding the tarantula, be sure to remove any uneaten crickets from the cage after about an hour so the tarantula doesn't get stressed and so the crickets don't eat the egg sac. For every tarantula, the development time is different. If the tarantula is a rose hair, the carapace will be a beautiful dark pink coloration. If it is a woolly tarantula, it will be course hairs all over the body and legs. Whether the eggs are fertile or not, it does not hurt to lightly mist the tarantula's environment at least twice a week, especially during air conditioning and heating seasons. Just make sure the substrate is not overly moist to produce mold.

She's gonna be a mommy. She may just be going thru the motions. Like Chickens, some critters make eggs whether they've mated or not, and she has to expel them from her body. So, she makes her little egg-sac and guards it with her life..
A good spray with baygon should fix ya problem :)
It might be an egg sac like you suggested..google it and see if that's what it looks like.
I am not sure, but it sounds pretty much like you

have a secret boy spider living in the house with

your friend's pet spider. The boy spider comes

to visit in the night and stays for a while singing

love songs to the female you are being paid to

take care of. In anticipation of the eventual moment

of joining (of the two spiders) your captive has

created a little love nest for the two of them.

Just feeling broody
