Will the farm want to do this

Will the farm want to do this2007-11-25 17:00:50

I am looking into boarding a horse I want to adopt at a farm. They are going to call me back to tell me whether or not I would be able to work off board there. I was going to see if my dad and I could build them a run-in shelter and if they would let me keep my horse there for free if I gave it to them. Do you guys think this is a good idea? I am just trying to think of ways to save money, so I have more to put into an emergency vet fund. Let me know what you all think by answering- please! Thanks all!

It just depends on the farm. If one says no try another. It worked for me. Look into little farms or ranches with one owner and a few horses. Many people only have time for the chores and give up riding and grooming to get through the neccesities. Good luck

I worked in a barn to trade boarding but never give them your horse
One time i worked off my broad so don`t give them your horse!!
If this is the only way you can keep your horse,,,, are you going to be able to meet later responsibilities..The cost of a shed will be absorbed quickly..About farrier and vet expenses, deworming,,,health papers and all the other expense associatwed with a horse?
Get everything in writing, that way they can never take you to court or anything and argue you never paid them. My parents ran into this problem and it was a nightmare. Get a written contract. Be careful they don't start using your horse as part of their riding school or anything. This can really ruin a great horse if your not careful.
so your saying that if you build them a run in shed, ur hoping that they'll let you keep the horse there for free, i don't know, it depends on the barn that you go to if they already have stalls and shelter for the horses they won't need a run in shed, also unless your willing to leave your horse outside all the time and have him use the run in shed and not be fed grain then it would probably be worth it to the barn owner but if you want them to grain and hay your horse also then it wouldn't be worth it to them cause in the long run it would cost them more money to maintain the horse then it cost you to make the shed. i don't know exactly how you want to do it, or where you live, cause you may not even be able to keep your horse outside all year round. i would just go to the different barns around you and see what they have to say. good luck.
Keep in mind the non emergency costs for having a horse as well. There will be floating for teeth from time to time, shoes, sometimes a horse will throw a shoe and you'll have that additional cost. There is also depending on where you live blankets, cooling sheets, grooming supplies, tack etc..

I do not mean to be a downer, but I just know that sometimes the cost of upkeep is greater than the cost of the horse. It is something to be considered before going in on it and getting caught off guard when the bills come in. I wish you the best and hope that you can get your horse.
