Mostly making it impossible for them to get in. If you block off entry points, no rats.
Also, rats will only stay if there is a nice food supply. Remove any food and they will leave on their own.
There are humane traps and kill traps. Get both at hardware stores. Glue strips are gruesome but effective, they get stuck in the glue and can't move. If you don't find them and take them off the strip, they starve to death. You can hear them crying. So gross
Note: the "ultra sonic" devises don't work. I saw them on the news and the pet rats slept right through the demonstration.
rat traps or sticky traps
Get a jack russell. Or two cats. Forget the poison.
snakes
I am just guessing, but maybe a high pitched device that keeps insects away might work or a dog trainer electronic device that keeps dogs in a certain area not to cross over.a certain line, like in your yard or restricted area.
mole snakes or Boas
Oh get some chickens, they love eating rats!! Other than that- I think the rat poison is your best bet. Cats soon tire of the rats if there are too many.
clean the garage or shed to start off
Keep your shed and garage clean and organized. do not put garbage cans in there. Rats are attracted to food. Remove the food and the clutter and they will leave.
A few boxes of moth balls spread around.
Glue traps are the best method to trap rats and mice . I found detailed information at http://pests.in
