my horse is 1 year and 7-1/2 months old.he is part morgan and part QH.gelded 3 months ago and very calm now. he is VERY strong, stocky, and stout! he is around 15 hands and growing..probably weighs around 1000 pounds.. very healthy.has had saddle on before and was very great i didn' set on him or anything just led him around with it and the girth pretty tight.

I weigh about 110 pounds.am 5' 4'' tall. 14 and 1/2 years old.been riding for past 3 years and taking lessons from a professional hunter/jumper instructor

I am wanting to know if it would be okay if I just try to ride my horse--just set on him for a few minutes with the saddle and girth on him?? My dad and uncle have told me that he would be okay b/c he is very bold and stocky built and I don't weigh much at all..

would it be okay?? He is a well behaved horse and he has been saddled(english) and girthed aprox. 6 times for the past 1/2 year and did great.

my brother-in-law wants to help mabe leading the horse.

Answers:

if he is stout and weighs this much you will be fine,,i gentle break all my horses this way starting at 18 months i start them with a blanket on then later go to carrying a lightweight saddle then by two i am on them..for light riding you just dont want to put anyone heavy on or do anything for long periods of time, what you are doing is fine, horses will be better if messed with like you are doing..they stay calmer and learn quick if they are not afraid and are used to the blanket, saddle and you,you are light enough you will not hurt him, i have never had a problem with a horse starting this way and especially in the morgan/qh breed.some breeds are finer boned and lighter horses and you have to be carefuli have never had a problem doing it this way..and i have been doing this for 32 years..good luck on your endeavor..

I WOULDN'T. HE'S NOT DONE GROWING. ASK YOUR INSTRUCTOR FOR HIS OPINION AND ASK IF YOU CAN BRING THE HORSE THERE FOR HELP WITH HIS & YOUR TRAINING.
sit on him that is all he his bones are not strong yet and really don't need to be worked. if you may be walk in a rounding pen for like 1 min that would be ok. but DON'T PUSH IT. ok
i assume u r asking because u know he shouldn't b ridden until he's 2. i see no reason why u can't as long as the adults r around. what does ur instructor say. the main reason they don't want u riding him before he is 2 is beacuse they want to make sure his bones r fully grown and strong and u won't make him swayback. it won't hurt to sit on him, and i known u r anxious but 6 more months will b here very soon. good luck.
if you walked around for a few minutes and get off i would say ok. if he start's bucking or throwing a fit wait awhile. horses bones don't get done growing until they're 5. and they're joints are still soft when they're 3. when weight is put on they're joints too soon they can have bad ones later in life and have many medical problems. i'm sure there is more ground work you could do like ground driving or lunging. wait a few more months for a lot of riding and his joints to mature.
